Kiai Haji Yunus Anis

Kiai Haji Muhammad Yunus Anis (May 3, 1903 – April 14, 1979) was an Islamic scholar and a prominent figure in the Muhammadiyah organization. He served as the General Chairman of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah from 1959 to 1962. Born in Kauman, Yogyakarta, Yunus Anis was the eldest son of Haji Muhammad Anis and Siti Saudah. From a young age, he received intensive religious education at home. His formal education began at Sekolah Rakyat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. He later continued his studies in Batavia (Jakarta), attending Al-Atas School and Al-Irsyad School under the guidance of Sheikh Ahmad Surkati. Yunus Anis was known as an exceptional organizer and administrator. He actively nurtured the youth division Hizbul Wathan and once served as a Board Member of the Muhammadiyah Branch in Batavia. His outstanding leadership earned him the trust to serve as the General Secretary of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah during the periods 1934–1936 and 1953–1958.

During his leadership, he oversaw the development of the concept of Muhammadiyah Personality, formulated by a team led by K.H. Fakih Usman. This concept was later ratified at the 35th Muhammadiyah Congress in 1962.
