Kiai Haji Hisyam was a pivotal figure in the history of Muhammadiyah, playing a significant role in advancing Islamic education in Indonesia. He is known as the founder of Muhammadiyah�s educational foundation and served as the General Chairman of Muhammadiyah for three terms. In addition to being a scholar, Kiai Hisyam was also a batik entrepreneur and a court servant (abdi dalem) of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. He actively contributed to the editorial team of Suara Muhammadiyah magazine alongside Kiai Ahmad Dahlan and other prominent figures.
To promote education, Kiai Hisyam was entrusted with leading the Muhammadiyah School Division in 1920. He was committed to establishing a grand university to produce Islamic scholars and Muhammadiyah teachers. Under his leadership, the number of Muhammadiyah schools grew rapidly, including the establishment of three-year elementary schools (volkschool) and vervolgschool as a continuation of the primary school.
Kiai Hisyam also played a crucial role in Kiai Ahmad Dahlan's efforts to obtain legal recognition for Muhammadiyah from the Dutch East Indies government. Together with other figures, he was appointed as a member of Boedi Oetomo as an initial step to gain formal support for Muhammadiyah's establishment.
Through his dedication, Kiai Hisyam made significant contributions to the development of Islamic education and the Muhammadiyah organization in Indonesia.
