Kyai Haji Faqih Usman (March 2, 1904 – October 3, 1968) was a prominent Islamic scholar and politician in Indonesia, particularly within the Muhammadiyah organization. Born in Gresik, East Java, he came from a humble and devout Muslim family. From a young age, Faqih Usman displayed a strong interest in both religious and general knowledge. As the General Chairman of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership from 1961 to 1971, though he held the position for only a few days before his passing, Faqih Usman was known for his strong political vision and significant role in developing Muhammadiyah as a modern and adaptive organization in response to the changing times.
Faqih Usman’s contributions and innovations included modernizing and structuring Islamic education, as well as strengthening Muhammadiyah’s role in Indonesia’s social and political life. He was also known as a mediator in political conflicts, notably his efforts to reconcile the conflict between the PRRI (Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia) and the central government.
Faqih Usman passed away on October 3, 1968. Despite his brief tenure as General Chairman of Muhammadiyah, his contributions to the organization and the nation are remembered and respected to this day.
