Prof. Dr. Haji Ahmad Syafi’i Ma’arif is an Indonesian Islamic scholar and intellectual born on May 31, 1935, in West Sumatra. He is known as the former Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership for the 1998–2005 period and the founder of the Maarif Institute. In addition to his significant role in education and social organizations, Buya Syafi’i is also active in writing and developing moderate and inclusive Islamic thought.
Education and Career
Ahmad Syafi’i Ma’arif pursued his education at Yogyakarta State University and later continued his studies abroad. He obtained his Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago. After returning to Indonesia, he became a lecturer and actively engaged in various religious and social activities. As a Muhammadiyah figure, he introduced an Islamic approach that emphasized interfaith dialogue and cultural diversity.
Contributions and Recognition
Ahmad Syafi’i Ma’arif is also known as a speaker at various international seminars and conferences discussing religious, political, and social issues. His contributions to the development of moderate and inclusive Islamic thought are widely recognized, and in 2008, he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his efforts in advancing education and tolerance in Indonesia. Buya Syafi’i Ma’arif's thoughts and works have had a significant impact on modern Islamic thought in Indonesia, especially in creating constructive dialogue between religious communities and introducing values of moderation in religious life.
