Prof. Dr. H.M. Amien Rais, M.A. was born in Surakarta on April 26, 1944. He is an intellectual, politician, and a key figure in the Indonesian reform movement. Amien Rais studied at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1967. He then continued his studies abroad, obtaining a Master of Arts (M.A.) from the University of Notre Dame and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Chicago with a dissertation titled The Political Development of Indonesia, which later became a reference in the study of Indonesian politics, especially in relation to Islamic politics.
Amien Rais was also active in the field of education, particularly in fostering critical thinking among students. He taught at Gadjah Mada University and various other educational institutions. As an educator, he emphasized the importance of intellectualism and independent thought in shaping a better future for Indonesia.
